I only have one shower and one sink. I do not have a washing machine, dishwasher or bathroom sink. My system is set up to be on-grid or off-grid and to be water conscious. Alright, are you ready? Off-grid means that you are NOT connected to city water and that your system is self-contained. On-grid is when you are connected to city water, such as in an RV park. I have both off-grid and on-grid options in my tiny house, which I recommend for flexibility in parking. Of course, if you will always have a city water connection, having an off-grid system is not necessary. Freshwater is the water you use for drinking, cooking, showering, toilet, washing dishes, etc.

Can you imagine everyone within a thousand-mile radius losing the electrical grid and all technology at one time? Is there a way to protect your personal electronics or your home electrical systems? There are several ways to protect against an EMP attack. One EMP protection technique is simply known as electrical shielding. If an electrical cable has a grounded external braided shield, the electromagnetic field will not penetrate the shield.
It will induce a current in the shield and release that current harmlessly into the ground. This is great, but what about devices, such as microelectronics? Named for Michael Faraday, one of the early scientists in the field of electromagnetics. Faraday discovered that electromagnetic fields will not penetrate a metal cage made of copper or other good electrical conductors. The fields impinge on the exterior of the cage.
Since all sides of the cage are electrically connected to each other, there is no induced electrical current. For current to flow there must be a differential in electrical potential.

To my utter dismay, they no longer made a pump that would fit this type of well. I could either salvage a manual pump from an old well a complicated assembly with a push rod and leathers or come up with my own design. Thus, the inertia pump was born of necessity. Since inertia pumps contain only one moving part and are constructed from durable materials, they are extremely reliable.
When I first got our little pop up camper, I didn’t know the first thing about fresh water, gray water, or black water systems. I mean, I knew black water was the stinky stuff, but not much more than that. 😉 We have a sink in the PUP, but technically I had no idea where the water came [ ].
I mean, I knew black water was the stinky stuff, but not much more than that. Well, gray water is the relatively clean waste water from your camper sinks and showers. It may contain stuff like soap, toothpaste, and food particles. Some allow you to dump gray water in the campground toilets or comfort stations. Others make you haul it to the dump station. When we are at a campsite with full hookups, our set up looks like the picture above. We purchased different colored hoses, and we store them separately, so our gray water hose is never confused with our fresh water hose.
It works like a dream, and I love it when we have full hookups. When we are camping in some more remote areas, though, full hookups are never an option.

Instead of retaining water in them at all times, toilets in campers use a trapdoor-type slide plus a water flush component to dispose of the waste. The water connection to the toilet is no different than used at home. One of the most common problems with the toilet is incomplete closing of the sliding trap door. When operating correctly, the slide fits snugly into a groove. After a period of time, bits of toilet paper may become lodged in the groove preventing the slide from closing tightly.
This will allow air to seep from the waste holding tank, causing an odor problem. Carefully clean this groove with a small piece of wire until the slide seats properly into the groove.

People at campgrounds are some of the friendliest most helpful people you will ever meet. I have seen it time and again when a camper pulls in and they are having problems with something and their next door neighbor, whom they never met, is right there to assist them. I have also observed and assisted several campers who were new to RVing and not really sure how to set their unit up when they arrive at the campground.
While talking to these new Rvers it came up more than once how they wished that they had a checklist to follow to make things easier. I compiled over 25 checklists in an attempt to cover all aspects of RVing. This is an excerpt from the book to assist new campers when they arrive at the campground. However most RVs do have many things in common and that is what we will concentrate on. The purpose of this checklist is to provide a basic system of what to do when you arrive at your site. Use only the items that apply to your RV and feel free to tailor the list to your needs.
If you are in a motor home and are towing a vehicle you may want to disconnect the vehicle in the campground registration parking lot before going to your site. Have someone drive the vehicle in front of you to assist in locating your site.

Where you live and the depth of your well determines the well’s water quality, regardless if the water is pulled from a water table, an aquifer, from fissures between underground rocks or from an underground stream. Over-the-counter whole house filters can temporarily solve many of your water’s issues, but may not have enough strength to filter water for more than a week or two before you need to replace the filter.
Severe water problems require the help of a state-licensed contractor or professional. Water Test Before you rush out to buy a house filter from your local home improvement store, complete a water quality test first.

Boat Plumbing By Don Casey Boat plumbing is a lot easier for the do-it yourselfer than plumbing at home, mainly because it doesn’t involve rigid pipes running inside solid walls. In fact, pipes are rarely used at all on boats, replaced by easier-to-handle flexible hose or tubing. Here is an overview of a typical on-board water system.

At the end of your camping season you drained the water system, winterized the RV and put it in storage. One problem with this is that on most RV’s when you drain the fresh water holding tank there is still some water left in the tank. Let’s say you do manage to drain all of the water out of the tank. There is still moisture in the water system. Just imagine what can grow in that moist tank while it sits for three or four months. I’d rather not think about it.
This is the water tank that you drink from and the water you use to wash dishes and take showers with. We cannot assume that it will stay safe and fresh like the water system in our home. Contaminated water is extremely dangerous.
